End of an Era: MTV Music Channels Set to Go Off-Air Globally

The international entertainment company Paramount Global has confirmed its plan to shut down multiple MTV music channels around the world — including those in Europe and parts of Africa — by December 31, 2025.

According to reports from Broadband TV News and AOL Entertainment, channels such as MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live are scheduled to officially go off-air at the end of this year. The main MTV channel will continue broadcasting, but with a stronger focus on reality-based programming rather than traditional music video content.

In Africa, sources including NickALive and The Citizen have indicated that Paramount Africa is also undergoing restructuring. It is highly likely that MTV Base and BET Africa could be affected by this broader plan to scale down operations and shut down select offices and channels.

The primary reason cited for this move is the changing viewing habits of audiences. More people now prefer watching music videos on digital platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and music streaming services, reducing the need for traditional linear TV music channels.

As of now, viewers in Tanzania and East Africa are advised to check with their television service providers to confirm whether channels like MTV Base or MTV Music are still available, as some regions have already reported that these channels have “gone off-air.”

This marks the end of an era for traditional live music television and the rise of a new age in digital entertainment.
